Weekend Summary – Cities title challenge diminish as Fidra take full points

13 Apr 2013

This weekend saw both City sides defeated by Fidra Lions 1 and 2′s respectively.
First up was City twos – who found themselves two goals down at the break.  In the second half however it was mostly City and they were unlucky not to claw their way back into the game.  Alan Green had made an outstanding contribution in the middle of the park driving the youngsters forward.  Final score on the day though was 2.0 to Fidra.

Next up was City ones against Fidra in a six pointer.  Whoever won this game were going to be left favorites for the title.

Fidra started on the ascendancy and should have been ahead as they dominated the first 10 to 15 minutes.  City however came back into the game – and had good chances to go ahead through Green and then Miller.

With City looking the more likely to score after the first fifteen minutes dominated by Fidra – it was a sickner for City when Fidra scored with the last touch of the half.

Half time 1.0 Fidra.  Into the second half and the game swung from end to end.  City again had the majority of the chances – but it seemed to be one of those days where nothing was going right in front of goal.

Fidra then found themselves two goals up – Tanton in goals made an attempted clearance but fell badly on the ball but recovered quickly to conceded a short corner – from which Fidra converted to go two up.
City were reduced to ten men for five minutes as Edwards was sent of for moaning. (correction for not retreating five yards)

Once parity resumed City played three up front and looked more and more lively in front of goal. Walker was unluck when his effort hit the upright – and other chances came from short corners.  Finally a goal came as a Fidra defender was adjudged to have fouled Rintoul in the D.  Rintoul despatched the penalty past the keeper.

City continued to press for the equalizer - Miller just pushing one past after great work from Jones.

Then in another good attack Griffiths saw his effort kicked off the line.  To all intents and purposes this was more of a clear cut penalty than the first – but with the close umpire un-sighted a short corner was given.

Fidra ran down the clock every opportunity they got – and did well to hold on to their one goal lead.

At the end of the day this was a well matched encounter.  Fidra looked nervy towards the end but held on to claim pole position in the title race.

City now need to focus on winning their remaining games to ensure they still take up the second promotion slot.  4 games to go – 4 wins required – first up next Saturday Inverlieth – then Sunday should Edinburgh Uni ever confirm the match is Edinburgh University – then on the Thursday night another match against Edinburgh University – before the final game of the season with a home game to WIT.
