In part two of the weekends action – Citys two sides were up against two strong teams in the cup.
City ones were first up against Menzieshill 2′s. Menzieshill’s twos pressed City right from the off – but it was City that almost took the lead when Miller intercepted a loose pass across the back – laid the ball to Walker who forced their keeper into the first save of the day.
Menzieshill then with pace pressed and pressed – and finally after not converting 5 short corners got there rewards. City lost the ball in the middle of the park and Menzieshill clinically attacked and finished. Deja-vu for the second goal as Innes was dispossessed after receiving a hospital pass and they played a great ball into the D and scored.
This didn’t stop City – A good ball to Miller who then found his strike partner Walker in the D – Walker composed himself before slotting home. Game on – or so we hoped.
Mezieshill didn’t let up. They scored a third when a slightly lifted ball beat the defence and was volleyed up and flicked over Murray at the back post.
The fourth goal was controversial – Campbell was 5 yards away for a free hit – but the umpire deemed he wasn’t - and Menzieshill scored from the resultant short corner. Shortly after they scored a fifth.
Cities heads never went down – and in the second half they fought to the death. Innes pulled one back finishing off a well worked short corner routine – then Walker and Campbell just failed to score as Menzieshill were having less and less of the ball. Green then had a double chance with the keeper saving and then saving the rebound before Green was bundled over going to push the third rebound home – but the umpire waved play on when the players thought a penalty was more appropriate.
Final Score 5.2 – but a moral victory winning 1.0 in the second half. City took time to get up to the pace of the game – but once they did they would have been more of a match to their opposition. This was a good workout for all concerned – but now City can look to trying to wrap up the league in the coming weeks.
City 2s again were taught a lesson by a strong Clydesdale 4th eleven. But again to a man the players fought to the death. 5.0 was the final scoreline – but they never gave up trying against a superior team.
