League leader’s Watsonians too strong for Citys battling two’s

02 Mar 2013

City twos took on the high and flying Watsonians 4th team on Saturday in what promised to be a very tough game.

City were in a confident mood after recent positive performances.

The line – up was as follows. Athol  Murray in goals. The back four was Robbie Swinton, Alan Griffiths, Kenny Buttercase. Midfield was strong even without the speedy  Ben Macalister, Jordan Baird at Right Mid with Sean Byron and Creag Cambell in the Centre and Allan Preston wide left.  The upfront pairing was Graeme Johnstone and David Sutton.

The play was pretty even to start off with although quite scrappy at times.

Skipper Robbie Swinton was thanking Athol Murray when a shot deflected of his stick onto goal only to produce a good save from the experienced keeper.

Shortly after that a stramash in the D led to a goal for Watsonians.

Not long after that a save from Athol hit straight against Kenny Buttercases Foot to give watsonians their second goal.

City took this on the chin after coming back from 2 goal lead becoming something of a habbit.

Just before Half time David Tanton Gave city a lifeline with a goal at the back post to give him his 3rd goal in 3 games.

City went into second half with fire in our bellies but unfortunately the next goal conceded knocked the stuffing out of City – which was quickly followed by another.  City fought on valiantly as the players kept their heads up and continued to play good hockey.

The Highlight of the match was when Jordan Baird was passed the ball in the City half and advanced past defenders  into the Watsonians D where he laid the ball off for  Graeme Johnston who put the ball between the keepers legs to get his second goal of the season.

Five minutes before the end city got a short corner and hope of an miracle come back was there but sadly it wasn’t to be.

Watsonians  got a short corner in the last play of the game and converted to make it 5-2.

Watsonians were good for the win although i think 5-2 flatters them. City will be upbeat and ready for the big derby game against Carnegie.
